Orthopedic Surgery Options Offered by Anasazi Animal Clinic
Here is a look at some of the orthopedic surgery options we offer:
Isometric Extracapsular Repair of CCL Rupture: A cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is one of the most common orthopedic injuries in dogs, making it difficult for the affected knee to bear weight. Isometric extracapsular repair of a CCL rupture involves placing a suture outside the joint to act like the original ligament. We typically recommend this procedure for small to medium-sized breeds to stabilize the knee joint, reduce pain, and improve function. Recovery is generally quick compared to more invasive techniques.
Femoral Head Ostectomy: Femoral head ostectomy (FHO) is a surgical procedure that helps restore mobility in pets suffering from hip conditions, such as hip dysplasia, chronic arthritis, or hip joint damage. The procedure involves removing the head and neck of the thigh bone called the femur, which helps prevent bone-on-bone contact, relieving your pet's pain. Over time, the body creates a "false joint" from surrounding tissues, restoring mobility. FHO can be ideal for pets who are not candidates for total hip replacement.
Patellar Wedge Resection: Some pets, especially smaller breeds, suffer from luxating patellas, which occur when the patella, or kneecap, slips out of its normal position in the knee joint. This can lead to pain, lameness, and decreased mobility. Patellar wedge resection involves reshaping the kneecaps or tightening the ligaments that hold them in place, which helps realign the kneecap and prevent it from slipping out of place. The procedure helps reduce pain and restore normal movement, preventing further knee damage.
Amputation: In cases where trauma, tumors, or severe infection affects a limb beyond repair, amputation may be our only viable option to relieve pain and save your pet's life. Even though it's a difficult decision and always a last resort, most pets adjust quickly to life after amputation, regaining mobility, and leading active lives.
